Why did you choose your field of study?

I chose engineering for a couple of reasons. First, I enjoyed physics and mathematics throughout high school, which are the foundations of engineering. Also, electrical engineering is a degree that has broad applications in many industries, and is generally at the forefront of technological advancement.

Why did you choose PNW?

My dad is an alum of PNW (formerly Purdue Calumet), so I had known about PNW from an early age. I began to seriously consider PNW after I took two dual enrollment classes in my senior year of high school. In those classes, I was able to see first-hand the benefit of small class sizes coupled with quality Purdue curriculums. Those factors made me choose PNW over other college options.

What has been your most rewarding academic experience at PNW?

As a member of the PNW Honors College, one of my most rewarding experiences was being able to represent the PNW Honors College at the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Conference in both Boston, MA and New Orleans, LA. Presenting research at these conferences provided an opportunity to engage with and learn from other students across the country. I am grateful to PNW and the Honors College for the ability to be a part of those conferences.

Any specific classroom projects/learning experiences that have been beneficial?

My senior design project has been particularly rewarding so far. The PNW Electrical and Computer Engineering Department worked with me on developing my own proposal for a senior design project. My partner and I have designed a 6.2kW residential solar array and we will be installing it over the coming weeks. As the team leader, I have learned valuable skills throughout the process that will help me in the workplace.

PNW activities/organizations/teams:

Throughout my four years at PNW, I have been involved in the Honors College at PNW. Honors has given me many unique opportunities, such as peer mentoring, committee participation and leadership, and the ability to work with faculty on additional projects.

Faculty and/or staff members who have helped you along your journey at PNW:

I thoroughly enjoyed taking Calculus I with Professor Karunaratne. His teaching methods and emphasis on critical thinking helped prepare me for the higher math classes.

Dr. Warren’s Physics classes were eye opening. He has a special ability to make complex principles easy to understand and bring math/science concepts to life. I always appreciated his willingness to meet and discuss class topics.

Dr. Li Tan has always been a guiding influence throughout my engineering classes. As my senior design project advisor, he has been supportive throughout and always offers sound advice and feedback.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plan is to pursue further education opportunities next year at Florida College in the Tampa, FL area. After that, I will be pursuing an electrical engineering position in the NWI area.

Any final thoughts about your PNW education:

PNW provides a quality education to its students and unique opportunities to better themselves. As a senior, I am thankful for the years that I’ve spent here at PNW and for the quality faculty and students that I have come to know.
